Wicked has been going strong for 15 years and this beloved musical still continues to bring in a crowd.
The books and films associated with "The Wizard of Oz" are always crowd pleasers, but the musical "Wicked" (which has the full title "Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz") is one of the most popular stories connected to the franchise. It is based on a few different novels that include Frank L. Baum's original Oz stories as well as a novel written in 1995. It is an entirely different "take" on the classic tale and gives a whole new spin to the story. It has been on Broadway for more than ten years and is also making a national tour with stops in Philadelphia, Houston, Boston, Toledo, and more.
For those wondering how long Wicked is, the show is 2 hrs. and 45 minutes long with 1 intermission. The minimum age for children attending is 4 years old and all children must have their own ticket.
Playbill calls the story a "revisionist look at an American icon of evil", and the story is indeed unique since it is told through the perspective of the infamous "Wicked Witch of the West". The original tales by Baum did indeed paint this witch as the classic storybook villain but audiences now see a new side of the story.
The Baum novels spanned many years and were originally depicted as an original and authentic American fairy tale that was entirely unlike anything from Europe. In the books, the Wicked Witch of the West is purely evil, and this is carried over into the film versions of the books as well. It is refreshing to get this entirely different version of the story, and the award winning songs and writing make it even more enjoyable.
Wicked was nominated for almost a dozen Tony Awards and won several Drama Desk Awards. It was the winner of a Grammy Award and has continued to receive nominations and awards when subsequent productions open abroad.
The Broadway run of the show has been a phenomenal commercial success and it has persistently broken the "house" records at the Gershwin Theater in New York more than 20 times. It also sets records when it tours; with the 2007 Chicago run selling more than two million tickets!
In addition to the unique story line, it is the soundtrack and the impressive sets and costumes that keep pulling in such enormous crowds. The songs in the show have made their way into such popular programs as "Glee", "The Simpsons", and even the movie "Zombieland" among dozens of others.
On tour now throughout North America, Wicked is a fantastic opportunity for family entertainment. It is an award winning and utterly magical event to enjoy at any age.
