Denver, the mile high city, is one of the many cities with professional teams in the four major sports in the country. However, professional baseball is the newest of them all. The professional baseball team in Colorado was established in 1991 and the Colorado Rockies became a part of the MLB in 1993.   This beloved team is in the West Division of the National League. As an expansion team, the Rockies first played their game at the Mile High Stadium, the home stadium of the Denver Broncos. In their season opener in 1993, the Rockies won against Montreal. Since MLB games started in the city, attendance has been high and it was estimated that around 7.7 million  fans watched the games in the Rockies first two seasons. They played at their own ballpark in 1995 after the opening of the Coors Field and they won their maiden game there in April, 1995.

The term baseball’s "mile high style" was coined every time teams played at Coors Field. Being a city elevated exactly a mile above sea level, the air in this altitude is thin. There is a scientific report saying that a baseball that is hit 100 feet in New York will travel 10% farther in this city and hence, runs and even homeruns come inexpensively, punch-and-Judy hitters are turned into sluggers and there are no leads that are safe. During the 1999 season, there were 303 homeruns that set the MLB record for HRs in a season.

Coors Field was designed originally to seat more than 43,000 fans, but record attendances prompted the owners to increase the seating capacity to more than 50,000.
