Additional Carolina Panthers Information

It took six years for pro American football fans in both North and South Carolina to have their own pro football team. In 1993, the franchise called Carolina Panthers was born. The people in downtown Charlotte rejoiced over this news. The team of Jerry Richardson led the acquisition of the franchise since 1987. Support for this acquisition was overwhelming including Jesse Helms, a Senator, as well as the governors for both North and South Carolina. In October of 1993, the Carolina Panthers became the 29th team of the NFL, which was the first expansion team since 1976. They played at the National Football Conference at the West division (but moved to South division in 2002). The Panthers had a very impressive 1995 season, finishing the regular season with 7 – 9 record, the best of any expansion team at that time. The club saw another big improvement the following season as they won the West division title of the NFC with an impressive 12 – 4 record. They also advanced to the NFC conference title game.

In 2001, the Panthers suffered their worst season with a record of just one win in 16 games. They reached this place again in 2003 and were able to win it and had a trip to the Super Bowl XXXVIII. Another run happened in 2005 when they managed to reach the NFC conference title game but lost again. In 2010, the Panthers had a rough season with 2 – 14 record. The 2011 and 2010 seasons for the Panthers were almost similar; with a rough start, but were able to finish strong at the end to avoid being the cellar dweller again.

The Panthers first played their home games in Memorial Stadium in 1995, and quickly moved to their current stadium, the Bank of America Stadium in 1996. This new stadium is located at Charlotte and was mainly designed for American football games by the popular HOK Sports Facilities Group. This stadium can accommodate 73,778 seats. It is financed privately and features a natural grass and an open-air stadium. The stadium was designed as the self-contained headquarters for the Panthers. There are practice fields, training facilities and administrative offices.

The facade of the stadium features several one of its kind elements like the huge tower and arches located at the entries that are dressed with the building materials accentuating the colors of the team. The interior of the stadium is designed to deliver a generous ratio of refreshment stand and restroom amenities together with wide seats and state-of-the-art sound electronics systems.
