Every year it seems like a new and exciting music festival or tour appears on the list of "must see" shows. In fact, the whole experience is becoming part of many music fans' annual experience. What might surprise most attendees is that they are participating in something that has gone on since the ancient Greek era. At that time, the famous oracle at Delphi was the spot for special games, and there was a lot of music performed.
Today, this has evolved into events such as Bonaroo and Lollapalooza among others. No matter what continent, you are likely to find a festival associated with every sort of musical genre, and even with many types of general entertainment. In Milwaukee, WI the annual Summerfest is in the record books as the world's largest music festival, and there are others in the world that are close competitors.
In the United States there are jazz, indie, pop, country, folk, classical, and all other forms of music festivals. Some of the most famous include Coachella, Governor's Ball, Firefly, Essence, Pitchfork, and Newport Folk, among many others.
These all tend to be multiple day events that require attendees to travel to the locations. They are not necessarily touring festivals, and this makes them even more appealing to some because they get to roll the experience into a lengthier trip.
It is best to plan far ahead for these events, however, because tickets don't hang around. Also remember that accommodations can be tough to find (even when considering camping on site when this is allowed). If you are hoping to enjoy live music in a totally unique setting, you will want to plan ahead.
Remember too that many of the festivals use headlining performers who will do shorter sets, and that some of the festivals use multiple stages to maximize the number of performers. Do your research to book your tickets when the acts you want to see appear, and avoid disappointment by failing to read the schedule of events.
Music festivals are fun and popular and let you experience your favorite forms of music in amazing settings.
